Gemstone Globes

There are more than 3000 minerals on earth but only 30 of them qualify as gemstones. What if you could have a number of those 30 gemstones in one place in your home? You can, with gemstone globes .

While you may have heard of emerald, rubies and other higher end gemstones, there are also many lesser-known ones, such as morganite and iolite. These gemstones are an organic piece of the Earth and its past. How appropriate that they be used to create a replica of the planet through becoming part of gemstone globes.

There are a variety of gemstone globes on the market today. Some of them are small, desktop models. Others are massive spheres that can take over the center of a room. Picking the right size of a gemstone globe for your home will all depend on how much space you have to fill with a globe and how much you want to spend on one.

Gemstone globes are not cheap, but neither is a sculpture or other piece of art, which is exactly what gemstone globes are. Artisans cut each individual piece of gemstone that is used to create the shapes of countries, continents and oceans on gemstone globes. Not only are they cut to fit the opening on the globe for the country shape, but these pieces also have to be crafted on a curve to go along with the natural curve of the planet. It is a painstaking process, but produces breathtaking results.

Once you have gemstone globes in your home, you need to know how to care for them. Remember, these are pieces of art. Treat them with the respect they deserve.

Cleaning them every day is a must. Just like everything else in your home, gemstone globes will collect dust and need to have it removed. This can be done with a dry cloth.

For smudges and fingerprints that are on the globe and don't seem to want to come off, you will have to use a little tougher of a tactic. Get a damp cloth and put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on it. Rub the cloth over the areas of the globe that have the fingerprints and streaks until they are all gone and the pieces of stone have recaptured their original shine.

If you manage to get stains on your gemstone globes, you may have to take things one step further. Try a cloth with warm water and a small amount of dish soap or another mild detergent. Anything abrasive could damage the stone and make a mark you can't fix, so you want to stick to very mild cleaners for this job.

These cleaning tips have only covered the globe itself. What about the stand? It too is likely going to be a little messy from time to time and need some extra cleaning. For wooden stands , you should use a furniture oil or polish to make them shine like new. If you have a metal stand, a dry cloth should remove any dust, and a metal cleaner should be brought in for the rest of the job.
